The Athearn ATH71590 SD39 is a detailed HO scale model of the Copper Basin Railway #304, equipped with DCC and sound. In the late 1980s, the Copper Basin RY acquired surplus Ex - SP SD39s for copper concentrate trains in AZ. Our models accurately depict unique features like large plows, rear brake wheels, and specific road number details. Road numbers #302, #303, and #304 each have their own distinct features. The SD39 series locomotive features separately applied air tanks, coupler cut levers, and more for a realistic look and smooth operation. Primed for grime models mimic 'In Service' equipment, while sound - equipped models come with an Econami sound decoder and a variety of authentic sounds. The prototype SD39, built in 1966 by EMD, had 2,300 hp. This model has DCC, Tsunami2 sound, LED lighting, and is suitable for ages 14 and up with no assembly required.

Using this Athearn SD39 model is easy. You can operate it in both DC and DCC modes. In DCC mode, you'll have access to full DCC functions. Just connect it to your compatible power source and start running it on your track. Make sure the track is clean and free of debris for smooth operation. When it comes to maintenance, keep the wheels clean to ensure good electrical pickup. You can use a soft cloth and a bit of mild cleaner if needed. For the sound - equipped models, avoid exposing them to excessive moisture as it can damage the sound decoder. If you want to customize the model, like adding grime or rust, the primed for grime models are a great starting point. Just use appropriate model - building paints and techniques. Remember, the minimum recommended track radius is 18 inches, but 22 inches is better for optimal performance. And since it's recommended for ages 14 and up, keep it away from younger kids to prevent any accidental damage.
