Prototype and Background Info
In 1984, EMD introduced the first four SD60 demonstrator locomotives. The SD60 had a 3,800 - horsepower, 16 - cylinder, turbocharged 710G3A. In 2010, NS SD60 #6653 started the SD60E Capital Rebuild Program for Norfolk Southern. The prime mover was rebuilt to 710G3B specs and rerated to 4,000 horsepower. A new motor - driven compressor, electrical cabinets, and wiring were installed, along with D99BTR traction motors. A split - cooling system helps meet Tier 0+ emission requirements and reduces fuel consumption. The SD60E has a tractive effort of 109,000 pounds. Externally, a new cab was installed for better crash protection and a more spacious work environment.

Using this Athearn SD60E locomotive is a breeze. First, make sure your track is clean and properly connected. Place the locomotive on the track and power it up. If you're using DCC, you can control the speed, direction, and other functions using a compatible DCC controller. For sound, the pre - installed SoundTraxx Tsunami2 decoder will give you realistic engine, horn, and bell sounds. When operating in DC, you can still enjoy basic functions like the engine running and the horn and bell sounds. As for maintenance, keep the locomotive clean. You can use a soft brush to remove dust from the body, wheels, and mechanical parts. Avoid getting water on the electrical components. Periodically check the couplers to ensure they're working properly. If you need to adjust any functions, refer to the CV chart in the box. Just remember, this product is recommended for users aged 14 and above, so keep it away from younger children to prevent any potential choking hazards or damage to the model.
