Rapido presents the 23517 ALCO PA model in HO scale, specifically the New Haven #0776 with LokSound and DCC. Note that the picture might show a different road number. The ALCo PA series locomotives are widely regarded as some of the most appealing diesel locomotives ever made. Built between 1946 and 1953 through a partnership of the American Locomotive Company and General Electric, they came in two models: the PA - 1 followed by the PA - 2. The PA - 1 was powered by a 16 - cylinder 244 diesel engine from ALCo, generating 2,000 HP, while the PA - 2 had 2,250 HP. These locomotives aimed to compete with General Motors’ EMD E - units in the passenger locomotive market. While they were stylish, they lacked in reliability compared to the EMD 567. As passenger service declined in the 1960s, most PAs were retired and scrapped. However, in 1967, four retired Santa Fe units were bought by the Delaware and Hudson. In 1974, they were rebuilt and upgraded with ALCo 251 V - 12 engines. These units served on Amtrak’s “Adirondack” and Boston area commuter trains. Eventually, all four ended up in Mexico. Two ex - D&H units have since returned to the US. Rapido’s HO scale model is the first mass - produced plastic HO scale model of the PA series with accurate contours and road - specific details. It uses a 3 - D laser scan of Doyle McCormack’s preserved unit. Both PA - 1/PB - 1 and PA - 2/PB - 2 variants are available. The first run of these HO Scale ALCo PA models has many great features. It has correct nose and roof profiles scanned from the prototype, tons of road - name specific details, A units and A - B sets, dynamic or non - dynamic brake versions, full underbody piping and conduit, separate grab irons and handrails installed at the factory, etched - metal grilles, lit number boards, headlights, class lights, control stands, and full cab interior. It also includes pre - decorated etched side number panels for Rio Grande and an operating Gyralite or red Mars light. It uses Rapido’s proven drive system from the FA - 2 and offers DC/Silent (21 - pin DCC Ready) or DC/DCC/Sound options. It's available as single powered A - units or in A + B powered sets.

Using your Rapido HO Scale ALCO PA model is straightforward. First, choose the power option that suits you - DC/Silent (21 - pin DCC Ready) or DC/DCC/Sound. If you're using the DCC functionality, make sure your DCC system is properly set up. Connect the model to your power source and start running it on your HO scale track. When handling the model, be gentle as it has delicate parts like the separate grab irons and handrails. Avoid dropping or knocking it against hard surfaces. For maintenance, regularly clean the wheels and electrical contacts with a soft, dry cloth to ensure smooth operation. Check the underbody piping and conduit for any signs of damage. If you notice any loose parts, you can use a small amount of appropriate glue to reattach them. Store the model in a cool, dry place to prevent any warping or damage to the plastic body. If you're not using the model for a long time, it's a good idea to disconnect it from the power source to avoid any potential electrical issues.
