Open hopper cars are perfect for carrying commodities like coal. They've been used worldwide when automated cargo handling is needed. Unlike gondola cars, they have opening doors on the underside or sides to unload cargo. Our model's offset-side 4-bay hopper evolved from earlier 2-bay designs and can unload faster thanks to the 4 doors underneath.
Using these Athearn hopper cars is easy. Just connect them to your train using the body - mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers. They're weighted for good performance, so they'll run smoothly on your tracks with a minimum radius of 18 inches. When it comes to maintenance, keep the 33” machined metal wheels clean. You can use a soft, dry cloth to wipe off any dust or debris. If you notice the brake wheel isn't working as well, check to make sure it's still firmly attached. As for the trucks, whether you have the 50 - ton Bettendorf or 70 - ton Roller Bearing ones, just ensure they're free of any blockages. Avoid using harsh chemicals on the painted and printed body, as it could damage the realistic decoration. With these simple steps, your hopper cars will stay in great shape for a long time.
