PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION
In 1949, EMD introduced the GP7. It had a short hood instead of an end - cab, and full - height hoods to fit the diesel engine and components. In 1954, EMD upgraded it to the 1,750 horsepower GP9. Externally, the first GP9s were similar to the last GP7s. Later versions had different louver arrangements and some lacked frame skirting. The GP9 had the same fuel tank, steam generator, and dynamic brake options as the GP7, including “torpedo tube” air tanks on the roof. Many railroads rebuilt their GP7s and GP9s instead of buying new locomotives.
