Step into the glorious days of model railroading with our Scale Trains Classic HO Scale 40-foot 70-ton 4-bay open hopper kit. This kit features the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) road name with number #72557, though the picture might show a different road number. It's a breeze to build! All you need is a Phillips screwdriver, some glue, and just a few minutes. Our Kit Classics™ freight cars are ideal for passing on the timeless joy of model railroading to the next generation. The product comes with an all-new roadname and multiple road numbers. It's easy to assemble, with finely cast stirrup steps, end ladders, grab irons, underbody, and brake system. The interior has molded details like rivets and side wall bracing, and there's a separately applied handbrake wheel. It has one-piece detailed Bettendorf trucks, 33” machined metal wheels with an accurately profiled .110” wide wheel tread. The plastic semi-scale Type E knuckle couplers are Kadee compatible, and the body-mounted coupler box can accept Kadee whisker couplers. It's weighted to industry standards, operates on Code 70, 83, and 100 rail, and the packaging safely stores the model when assembled. It has a minimum radius of 18”. Back in 1926, the Car Construction Committee of the American Railroad Association (ARA) designed this 70-ton self-clearing hopper car. They aimed to use as many standards as possible, and it shared many features with the shorter 50-ton car. Between 1926 and 1930, over ten thousand of these cars were built for 7 different railroads, and many lasted into the 1960s, with some going to second-hand owners.

Using this hopper model kit is super easy. First, gather your Phillips screwdriver and glue. Then, follow the simple steps in the instruction manual to assemble the parts. You'll have your model ready in just a few minutes. When handling the model, be gentle with the small parts like the stirrup steps and grab irons. Store the model in its packaging when not in use to keep it safe. To maintain your model, you can use a soft brush to clean it occasionally. If you want to replace the couplers, make sure they are Kadee compatible. Also, remember that the model operates on Code 70, 83, and 100 rail, and it has a minimum radius of 18”, so plan your track layout accordingly.
